Waitrose Taste of Cornwall - Truro
- Region: South West - Cornwall
- Value: £8.2m
- Contract terms: Agreed with Waitrose
- Contract length: 7 Weeks
- Procurement: Shell + Build
- Completed: 3 June 2016
- Site features & challenges: The project carried over a lot of staff and subcontractors from the shell construction. The team knew the site and, with effective management from Midas, were able to deliver the project on time.
The project involved an extensive cut and fill exercise before the main works could commence and the site was retained by a granite stone retaining wall to the perimeter.
The 21,000 sq ft. store is part of a partnership project between Waitrose, the Duchy of Cornwall and Cornwall Council on Duchy-owned land on the edge of Truro. The store was constructed using traditional foundations, a standard steel frame and a single ply roofing system, with locally sourced stone cladding to complement the local buildings, a big driver for Midas was to use local subcontractors and local sourced materials. We worked closely with the design team to ensure this happened. The sales floor was located on the ground floor with first floor offices and warehouse storage, a separate retail unit for usage by the Duchy’s own local food range ‘Taste of Cornwall’ was also included in the construction.
