Exeter College Sports Hall, Exeter

Project Summary

  • Region: Devon & Cornwall
  • Value: £4m
  • Contract Length: 45 weeks
  • Procurement: Design & Build
  • Completed: June 2015

This project comprised the design and build of a state-of-the-art sports hall complex on Exeter College's operational Queen Street campus.

The project was undertaken on a brownfield site at the heart of Exeter's city centre, 100m from Exeter Central train station. The site had previously been used as a rubbish tip and extensive ground surveys were required to assess potential need for remediation.

The site was bound by a Network Rail line to the north, with the building footprint within 6m of the line at the closest point, and was surrounded by a mixture of commercial and residential buildings, including other college buildings and a nursery. The site had one access/egress point and was reached via a lane shared with the neighbouring nursery. The surrounding college campus was operational throughout the project.

The building was constructed with deep core piling, concrete slab floor and steel frame. The elevations were built with brickwork to 3m, then with Kalwall system, cladding and timber strips above.

The finished building features a six bedroom court sports hall with 500 capacity retractable seating system, changing rooms, offices, first aid room, gymnasium, classrooms, sports science and rehabilitation laboratory, plant room and viewing balcony.

BREEAM Excellent was awarded, with contributing elements including an 8.5kW PV array, LED lighting and motion sensor systems.
