Midas appointed to build 204 new homes as part of Barne Barton transformation in Plymouth

Midas has been appointed to build 204 new homes as part of the major regeneration of the Barne Barton area of Plymouth by the UK’s largest provider of affordable housing, Clarion Housing Group.

Formerly Britain’s largest naval estate, Barne Barton is being transformed into a sustainable and vibrant community through a redevelopment programme being led by Clarion.

Midas will take forward the next phase of development on a 4.65 hectare site within the neighbourhood, which lies within the St Budeaux district to the north west of the city centre. It will include 204 new homes, comprising two- and three-storey houses alongside blocks of flats, all finished in facing brickwork.

Barne Barton’s redevelopment includes replacing the now demolished existing flats with a combination of flats and houses, and introducing opportunities for low-cost home ownership. The homes being brought forward in this phase by Midas will feature a mix of shared ownership housing, homes for the over 55s and affordable renting opportunities.

As part of the extensive layout changes taking place on the estate, Midas will carry out hard and soft landscaping, including the creation of a one-way home zone to provide people-friendly streets, together with a public square, open spaces and green areas for people to enjoy.

Work is due to start on the project in April next year.

Chris Herron, Operational Manager at Midas Construction, said: “As a regionally-based business, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Clarion Housing Group on this major regeneration project breathing new life into Barne Barton and creating new, modern homes for people.

“Midas is committed to leaving a positive impact in the communities it works in, and we are looking forward to getting under way on this exciting new project and to working closely with Clarion Housing Group, the local community, Plymouth City Council and other project partners to bring a positive transformation to the area.”

Throughout the project, Midas will be delivering a bespoke Employment and Skills Plan with Plymouth City Council, alongside working closely with Clarion Housing Group’s charitable foundation, Clarion Futures. These two plans will help facilitate opportunities for local people to benefit from the project and the investment in the area.

Clarion Housing Group is investing £22m in the regeneration of the Barne Barton estate. The masterplan, created by Clifton Emery Design, will transform the layout and design, resulting in a mixed tenure community and a variety of housing types.

Paul Quinn, Director of Regeneration at Clarion Housing Group, said: “We’re really pleased to have the Midas Group on board. We remain committed to supporting residents and delivering a successful regeneration project tailored to their needs. We were really struck by Midas’ vision to help sustain and create communities and look forward to working with them as these wonderful new homes are built for current and future generations.”

The Midas Group delivers projects across a range of sectors including; education, residential and commercial developments, and has offices throughout the South West, the Midlands and Wales.
